Howden Re strengthens Latin America and Caribbean capabilities with two senior appointments
Howden Re, the global reinsurance, capital markets and strategic advisory arm of Howden Group, today announces the appointments of Carlos Garcia as Managing Director and Karina Lopez as Director, further strengthening its Latin America and Caribbean offering. They will join the business in May and will be based in New Jersey.
Both bring established relationships with multinational, Puerto Rican and Dominican clients, which they will continue to develop at Howden Re, while expanding the firm’s reach across a broader range of markets and cedents in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The appointments reflect the growing demand for sophisticated reinsurance solutions across Latin America and the Caribbean. The region is characterised by a diverse client base, from large multinational cedants with complex, cross-border programmes to local and regional insurers requiring tailored, market-specific solutions. Navigating this breadth demands both technical expertise and deep local relationships. Howden Re already has an established presence in Brazil, Miami, and Peru, and these hires further enhance its ability to support clients across the wider region.
Carlos Garcia brings 22 years of experience in retail insurance and reinsurance. Having spent four years at Marsh before joining Guy Carpenter in 2008, he has extensive expertise in developing value propositions and strategic reinsurance solutions for clients in the region. He has worked with global and regional insurers across highly exposed markets including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, North America, and wider Latin America.
Karina Lopez joins from Guy Carpenter with 14 years of experience in the Latin America and Caribbean treaty division. She brings deep regional knowledge and a strong track record in developing reinsurance solutions and building long-term client relationships.
April McLaughlin, Head of Howden Miami, said: “Latin America and the Caribbean is a key growth region for Howden Re, presenting a compelling opportunity: a large, complex and underserved market where clients are increasingly looking for brokers with genuine local expertise and access to global capacity.
Carlos and Karina’s depth of experience across the region’s most exposed markets, combined with their technical rigour and strong client relationships, further strengthens the proposition we are building for clients across Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Mario Baotic, Head of International Growth Markets, International Treaty, Howden Re, added: “This is a region with significant catastrophe exposure, a rapidly maturing insurance market and real appetite for specialist reinsurance solutions. The appointments of Carlos and Karina reflect our ambition for Howden Re to be the partner of choice for clients across the region.”
