Be Inspired by: Brian Turner, Managing Director, Howden Re

Meet Brian Turner, a managing director and senior actuary at Howden Re, Brian is the subject matter expert for Financial Lines on the analytics team and is based in the New York office.

Brian started his career in insurance working for the rating bureau that sets rates in New York for workers’ compensation, going on to work at multiple large insurance companies before joining Howden Re two years ago. He said the company culture inspires entrepreneurship and the ability to take risks to forge your own path.

“One of the most refreshing things about Howden is the lack of red tape. The firm’s ability to grow, adapt, and invest in people means you’re supported to take on initiatives without barriers,” said Brian. “The training and development at Howden, particularly around hiring and nurturing diverse early-career talent, is unlike anything I’ve seen in my career. It shows a genuine commitment to building for the future.”

One of the personally fulfilling initiatives that Brian has taken on is creating and leading Howden’s team for the annual Bike MS New York fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“Supporting the National MS Society is deeply personal for me,” said Brian. “I have close friends who have been directly affected by MS, and seeing the progress being made through research makes this a cause where you truly feel your efforts can change lives.”

This past fall, Brian led a team of seven employees and together they biked 30 miles around Manhattan for the fundraiser, and raised over $3,200 for the National MS Society, including the use of the Howden Group Giving Match match.

“The ride created connections that wouldn’t normally happen in the office,” said Brian. “People who hadn’t worked together before built real relationships through a shared experience, which is incredibly powerful.”

Brian said that experiences like this add to his “why” for working at Howden Re. It’s something he feels is a key ingredient to creating the culture around the office, and throughout the organization

“There’s a strong sense of community — people want to support one another, whether that’s through charity initiatives or day-to-day work,” said Brian. “That mindset is something I really value at Howden.”
