Ahead of the Singapore International Reinsurance Conference, The Insurer interviewed Howden Re’s Phil Bonner and Christopher Bowler on how global Credit and Political Risk Insurance trends are shaping opportunities in Asia-Pacific.

Phil Bonner, Head of Global Credit, Howden Re, spoke to demand and capacity in the region: “Clients are focusing on high-quality, well-structured risks with strong credit profiles. New capacity has entered the market since Covid, which has inevitably led to some softening in primary and reinsurance rates. But the appetite for well-managed business remains very strong.”

Meanwhile, Christopher Bowler, Managing Director of Financial Risks, Howden Re, shared his thoughts on the macro environment: “Tariffs, trade realignments and supply-chain disruptions are top of mind when structuring and supporting policies. They interrupt trade and, at times, the solvency of risks covered. But these same tensions also create opportunities as new trade partnerships diversify and broaden the pool of risk available to (re)insurers.”

Looking ahead, both emphasised the need for robust scenario testing and preparedness. APAC’s unique blend of rapid growth and structural complexity, particularly when coupled with risks of rising geopolitical tension and further economic fragmentation, positions the region at the very heart of the market’s next chapter.
